tornado that struck our community and took the lives of ten of our own, the homes of hundreds of citizens and disrupted the lives of almost all in Winston County.
A memorial dedication and a religious service will be held at the entrance of Memorial Park at 416 East John C. Stennis Drive (Hwy 397) to mark this event. Here is the full rundown of the events of the day:
The Memorial Dedication will begin sharply at 4:00 pm. The program will include:
- Mayor Will Hill
- William Haynes
- Representatives of Winston Strong
- Senator Giles Ward
- The keynote speaker will be Governor Phil Bryant.
The program will include: a presentation of colors by the Ms. Highway Patrol, National Anthem by Parker Bullock, a Litany of Thanksgiving, Dedication, Proclamation, a Remembrance of those lost and a Veterans Tribute. This program will end promptly at 4:45 pm.
A tent on the north side of the highway as well as seating will be provided. Seating may be limited so a lawn chair should be considered. Parking is limited. Roadways within the cemetary may be used for parking as directed. IMPORTANT: Due to the location of the memorial and traffic issues, Hwy 397 (John C. Stennis Drive) will be closed promptly at 4:00 pm from Jones Avenue to Armstrong Street for the service. Do not expect to arrive late!!
The ceremony will be held regardless of weather. Current predictions include a 60-70% chance of showers.
At 5:15 pm - Stand Strong and Courageous:A Gathering of Our Beloved Community will take place in the same location. The program will include:
- Welcome & Invocation by Rev. Mike Childs of First United Methodist Church
- Special Music - Amazing Grace by The Sunshine Boys
- Message by Elder James E. Young of Calvary Apostolic Church
- Special Music - My God is Awesome by The Sunshine Boys
- Prayer for our Community by Rev. Scott Phillips of First Presbyterian Church
- Special Music - How Great Is Our God by The Sunshine Boys
- Benediction by Rev. James Morris of Wesley United Methodist Church
The Winston County Chamber Banquet will also be held on Tuesday evening beginning at 7:00 pm at Lake Tiak O'Khata. Governor Bryant is expected to be the keynote speaker at the banquet as well.
